Dreams to Reality
Reverse engineering Cryo's 1997 game toward a portable engine called OpenDreams.
Dreams to Reality is a 1997 game by Cryo Interactive. This project studies its executables and original disc data to recover the formats and behavior needed to run it on modern systems. The long-term goal, OpenDreams, is a portable C++17 engine that keeps the game's logic while replacing its old platform and rendering code.
What works today
The repository has a Python toolkit for inspecting and extracting the original media: audio, video, textures, scene geometry, models and metadata. All 95 unique scenes export through the recovered render graph, and a Babylon.js viewer makes the decoded data inspectable. Research notes record the evidence behind each format and runtime finding.
The native engine is still in development. A decoded asset or documented function is not the same as a running game; the next milestones are native asset loading, rendering and a first playable level.
The approach
OpenDreams aims to run the original game data and reproduce its behavior at a fixed 30-step simulation rate, with GPU rendering on modern machines. The Python decoders serve as a reference for checking the native loaders. The repository contains tools and research, no game discs or extracted assets; using it requires your own copy of the game.
