Elysium Unreal

Reconstructing Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines in Unreal Engine 5.8.

Elysium Unreal is a research project rebuilding Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines (2004) on Unreal Engine 5.8. It reads a local installation of the original game, converts its data into engine-neutral intermediates, and uses those to rebuild the world and gameplay systems. No game assets, scripts or maps are distributed with the repository.

How it works

A Python pipeline exports and validates the source data. Unreal commandlets bake the visual world into local packages; a C++ runtime then reconstructs entities, scripts, audio, interaction and save/load behavior from the exported data. The project keeps reverse-engineering notes and explicit contracts between the pipeline and runtime so that recovered behavior can be checked against the retail game.

What guides it

The aim is to keep the original's authored world, logic and gothic-punk feel while using modern rendering and presentation. Gameplay changes require understanding the original behavior first. The project remains a work in progress and requires your own legal installation of Bloodlines to build its game-derived content locally.

I wrote about the process in Elysium: a vampire walks into Unreal.
